How to choose a dental marketing agency: questions to ask
Choosing a marketing agency is a leap of trust. You hand over part of your growth and some of your budget to people you cannot easily check. These questions help you separate agencies that will do the work from those that will mostly send reports.
Questions to ask
1. Who do you work with?
Agencies that focus on dental practices understand the offers, seasons and patient questions. Ask how many of their clients are dental and what they do differently for a dental practice.
2. What will you measure?
Good answers mention calls, form submissions and booked appointments. Weak answers lean on impressions, clicks and rankings alone. Ask how they track calls and whether you will see the data yourself.
3. Who owns the accounts?
Your Google Business Profile, your ad account and your website should be in your name, with the agency given access. If an agency owns them, leaving becomes hard. Ask this before you sign.
4. How do you handle reviews?
The correct answer is that they help you ask real patients for reviews in a way that follows Google’s rules. If an agency offers to buy or write reviews, walk away. It puts your profile at risk.
5. What do you need from my team?
Marketing works better when the practice responds quickly, shares real photos and says which inquiries became patients. An agency that asks for this understands how results happen.
6. How is ad spend billed?
Find out whether the ad budget is paid directly to the platform or through the agency, and how that is shown on your invoice. Know what is the fee and what is the media.
7. What will reports look like?
Ask for a sample. You want plain language, the numbers that matter and clear next steps, not a wall of charts.
8. What happens if it is not working?
A good agency has an honest answer. They tell you what they would change, in what order and how long they would need to see a difference.
Red flags
- Guaranteed results. Nobody can promise a specific number of patients without knowing your market.
- No audit. An agency that proposes a plan before looking at your profile and your ads is guessing.
- Pressure to sign quickly. Good agencies are comfortable giving you time.
- Vague scope. If you cannot tell what you will get each month, you will struggle to judge it.
- Secrecy about methods. You do not need technical detail, but they should be able to explain what they do.
- Bought links or fake reviews. These break search engine rules and can hurt you.
What a good first conversation looks like
A good first call is mostly the agency asking questions about your practice, your goals and your capacity. It should include a look at your current Google profile and ads, and end with a clear view of where the opportunity is, whether or not you hire them.
Check fit, not just skill
Skill matters, but so does fit. Do they communicate in a way you like? Will you talk to someone who knows your account? Do they respect that your team’s time is limited?
