Google Business Profile for dentists: a practical checklist

· 7 min

When someone searches “dentist near me,” the first thing they usually see is a map with three practices and their Google Business Profiles. If yours is thin or out of date, you lose the call before the patient ever visits your website. Here is a checklist to get it right.

What is a Google Business Profile?

It is the free listing that appears on Google Maps and in search results for your practice. It shows your name, address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews and services. Patients use it to decide whether to call, get directions or visit your site.

Start with the basics

  • Claim and verify your profile. If you have not, do this first. Only a verified owner can manage it.
  • Use your real business name. Do not add keywords such as “Best Dentist in Your City” to your name. Google can suspend profiles that do this.
  • Check your address and service area. The address must match what is on your door and your website.
  • Set accurate hours. Include holiday hours. Wrong hours are one of the quickest ways to lose a patient.
  • Add a local phone number and your website link. Make sure both work.

Choose categories carefully

Your primary category is the strongest signal of what you are. For most practices it is “Dentist.” Add secondary categories that match services you really offer, such as a specialty category if it applies. Do not add categories for services you do not provide.

List your services

Add the services you offer, in plain language: new patient exams, cleanings, emergency visits, implants, aligners, whitening and so on. Add short descriptions that help a patient understand what to expect.

Add real photos

Photos build trust faster than almost anything else on the profile. Add:

  • The outside of your building and the entrance, so people can find you.
  • The waiting room and treatment rooms.
  • Your team, with permission.
  • Anything that shows what makes your practice welcoming.

Avoid stock photos and avoid photos of patients unless you have their written consent.

Reviews: ask the right way

Reviews influence both ranking and patient decisions. Do it in a way that follows Google’s rules:

  • Ask every patient, not only happy ones. Selectively asking only people likely to leave positive reviews is against Google’s policies.
  • Do not offer rewards in exchange for reviews. Incentives are not allowed.
  • Make it easy. Share your review link by text or email after a visit.
  • Respond to every review. Thank people, and keep it short.
  • Never confirm that someone is a patient in a public reply. Even a simple “we are glad your root canal went well” can disclose protected health information. Keep replies general and invite the person to call you.

Keep it active

Profiles that are updated tend to look more trustworthy. Post offers or news occasionally, update photos as your office changes, and keep your hours current.

Keep your listings consistent

Google compares your profile against other sources: your website and directories. Your name, address and phone number should match everywhere. Small differences, such as “Suite” vs. “Ste.”, can add up across many listings.

Track what the profile delivers

You should know how many calls, direction requests and website visits come from your profile. Use call tracking on the number listed and review the insights regularly. This tells you whether your changes are working.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the profile unverified or unclaimed.
  • Stuffing keywords into the business name.
  • Listing wrong or outdated hours.
  • Ignoring reviews, or replying in a way that reveals patient information.
  • Using different phone numbers and addresses on different sites.
